Here are some portraits I did for ESPN Rise magazine on one of the top female basketball players in the country. She was great to work with and was a natural in front of the camera.
Plus I felt pretty short next to here (shes 6′2).
This was for a cover and inside feature story so I tried to get some photos in her normal clothes as well as her uniform.
Here are some of my favorites.
Be sure to click on the photos for larger sizes.

Jeez Dustin, beauties again, really like the first one and the fourth one (you like that flying tie thing dont you ?
). I never worked with a beautydish i must say, why do you favor this for this shoot over an umbrella as you did in the basketball 70? Just wondering also if its worth for me investing in a dish
Cheers Vincent

Hey Dustin, awesome shots as always. Im guessing the description text is mean to say ‘normal clothes’
I too would also like to know why you chose the dish over the umbrella in this shot. If you had to choose one over the other which would it be?
In the third image, what is the bare alien bee doing to the right? Is this for the background?

Another inspiring and beautiful set here. Thanks so much for continuing to keep us updated. I’m continually inspired and impressed. Keep it coming. Best to you.

Excellent work, how did you get in contact with RISE?

Great stuff!! Thanks for sharing your set ups and giving back to the photo community!!

Dustin,
great work again. I was really inspired by your last basketball portraits. So when I was asked to shoot some portraits of the local womens team, I tried to mimic you style a bit. Hope that is ok

great job. i always love your style of shoot. my only question is: on the second shot (portrait with grey background. how do you stop the background light from spilling onto the subject. Great job best of luck in the new year and keep snappin the shutter.

My guess is a 10 degree or 20 degree gridspot on that bg light…

great post, very informative

Hey mate,
Nice post, you may want to consider having seperate images for your previews on the site before you click through to the larger image though. At the moment, because your site is resizing an image for you, it creates some bad looking pixelation in certain areas – especially edges.
Understandably this comes down to time and making the extra images but it would result in a better presentation if you didn’t realise already.

Awesome shots! I like all of the basketball photos and the subject is great!

Great shots and lighting! I like her pink fingernails!

Wow, stunning shots. Great lighting and a beautiful subject
Really like the one with the scarf over the shoulder, but the only thing drawing attention from it is the hair on her arms. It’s very hilighted in that pic!

Thanks for sharing this with us. Very informative and inspiring – and real good shoots!

Wow …
Got this site from strobist and I’m impressed. I also noticed the pink fingernails .. very nice detail.
And ofcourse thank you for the light setups, this will help strobists like me.

Brilliant photos! It seems you have your style all set, with the previous basketball session you blogged about a few months back!
Congrats from a fellow French photographer,

First shot on top of the page I like the best. Very pure and clean. great. I’m amazed with amount of details you are getting. I’m doing something wrong.

Dustin – I love the light in these portraits. I am a Phoenix commercial photographer in Arizona and really appreciate that despite the poppy eye catching lighting, there is still a fantastic element of soft flattering portrait light on the subject’s face.
