About two weeks after the first set of basketball portraits another tournament came up, this time it was at USC with a lot less players. Some of them I knew from the last time I took pictures of them which was cool. They opened up a lot more specially after I emailed them some of their last shots.
This shoot I had three people helping me move stuff around which was nice because we had to move the set up twice. We had everything in place and we were waiting for the first player to show up when my arch nemesis the “event staff” showed up. I know they are just doing there job, but most of the time, they do it very poorly and they are given way to much power in these rolls. We then moved down stairs with 7 lights, lightstands, cords, camera cases…ect.
We found a nice red curtain for a background for the first few pictures then moved again outside to the outdoor basketball court which was fun, but hard to get the players out of the building.
The light set up with similar to the last. 2 background (rim lights) and one big softbox in the front. Also, I never thought that basketballs would be so scarce at a basketball camp.
The set up, and Brian standing in for the bball players.

Jason,
I havent been really using the ring flash, its a little to bright for my tastes but I have used it for a few things.
Thanks Danny!
Hey Dan, thanks for the compliment! I actually have a pretty short video of the red curtain shoot I am about to put up. Thanks for looking! Should be in the next few days.
John, thanks for the comment, I have about 5 blog posts from the last month or so that I am finishing up now. I will be sure to post them now that people are coming, ha. Things have been so busy lately, which is never a bad thing.

Dustin, these are absolutely fantastic. Inspirational shots.
The last picture holds so much depth – it really does look 3D. I hope the work keeps coming your way so we get to see more of your creations.
Cheeky question – fancy writing a blog post on your post processing workflow? Think of the traffic! ;¬)
Keep shooting!

Amazing shots. Your style is great.
Just wondering what the black matte board was up for? Also is there much post production in these pictures?

Hey Dustin,
I just found you yesterday on Strobist. I’m drueling at your lighting technique. I’m so jealous. My stuff is so underpowered with my two flashes. You use enough lights to balance with even LA’s ambient backgrounds.
In the “More Basketball Portraits” set up shot I noticed a pocketwizard. How do you use those with alien bees? I’m interested in investing in a set up.

I love the one with those men after the curtains

Please tell me what you use to hold the black cards (gobos) on the stand
Thx
Great work!

Debbi- I used “super clamps” with “Magic arms” It was a little over kill for them but that is what I had with me. They are both made by manfrotto.

YAY! new blog to stalk! killer style! loves it.

Lovely shots — the heads-through-the-curtain is my favourite. Faint flavour of a 1940′s movie poster.

Even better than the first set! So original!

Thank you!

Great shots again! I use Alien Bees too. Do you have the battery or do you always use extension cords. I was thinking about getting the battery one of these days.
